I’m willing to bet that deep down inside you know what you really want. But you’re either confused on what action to take or you fear it won’t work out. 

I’m going to be straight with you for a minute. Fear is not a good enough excuse to not go after your dreams. You only live once, and, I promise you, the only thing you will regret at the end of your life is NOT doing that thing you always wanted to do. 

So WHO CARES if you don’t do it right the first time or if takes you a trillion and a half times to figure it out? All that matters is that YOU’RE happy doing whatever it is that YOU decide to do!

How to Overcome Fear + Go After What You Really Want

1. Write it down and tell fear to get outta here

When you’re struggling to commit and go after what you really want, start by writing it down. Do a brain dump, and just get everything out of your head and on to paper. 

If you’re just sitting around thinking about it, your mind will either try to come up with a million reasons why it won’t work or you’ll just move on to thinking about something else. You’ll just end up feeling confused and scared. And nobody wants that! So write it down. 

Take some time to really write out WHAT you want and WHY you want it. This isn’t the time to censor yourself or to think of all the reasons why it won’t work. This is the time to indulge yourself and imagine yourself already having it! 

Allow yourself to get excited about it! Be proud of the “future you” for achieving everything she always wanted! 

Once you’ve got a good handle on what you want and why you want it, now you’re ready to write about what you’re most afraid of. 

What’s stopping you from going after this amazing dream of yours? 

Try to get as detailed as possible. Usually once we break our fears down, we realize that they’re pretty silly, and there really isn’t much to be afraid of! 

So try to get to the root of your fear. Then tell it to take a hike! 

PRO TIP: What really helps me when I feel paralyzed by fear is imaging my life if I choose to deny myself what I truly want. When I imagine myself staying stuck in whatever mediocre situation I find myself in, failure and confusion don’t seem like such a big deal. It really lights a fire under me when I take a closer look at what the alternative is to not taking action!

2. Talk about it and assemble your support squad

Shout it from the rooftops! Be loud and proud about it! This is your life we’re talking about here! You should feel proud to be the type of person who says “hey, this is what I really want and you can be damn sure I’m going to get it!” 

And trust me. Talking about what you really want will help you start to feel more confident. Suddenly, that little voice inside your head won’t have so much power over you anymore! 

And the second best part? 

The more you talk about it, the more clear you will get on what you want and how to actually make it happen. There’s something so powerful about having to articulate your wants and needs to another human. You’ll soon realize that you know A LOT more than you give yourself credit for!

Now I’m going to give you a warning. Be careful about WHO you talk to at the beginning. 

Negative Nancy should not be the first person you spill your heart out to. You’re just starting to believe in yourself and your BIG dreams! You’re making some SERIOUS progress, but you’re still on shaky ground. 

So you don’t need someone coming in trying to “save you from making a big mistake” or whatever reason they are going to try to give you “because they care about you.”

Try talking to a close friend or a supportive family member. And if they ain’t got nothin’ nice to say then consider hiring a coach or connecting with a community online that shares similar interests! 

Trust me sister. There are PLENTY of other people out there just like you with similar dreams! 

3. Take action and keep moving forward no matter what

Now that you’ve built up some confidence and are clear on what you want, it’s time to figure out how to do the damn thing! 

Now, when you’re putting together a plan of action, you don’t need to know EVERY step of the way. In fact, it’s highly unlikely that you will. So don’t let this keep you from moving forward. 

You only need to know the NEXT step. 

The next thing is SUPER IMPORTANT so listen up. 

It doesn’t matter if it’s the RIGHT step. Don’t get hung up on the details. Just figure out what’s the NEXT action you’re going to take then do it. 

If it doesn’t work or it doesn’t feel good to you then pivot and try something else! Whatever you do, just keep taking action and you will eventually get there. 

Imperfect action will get you WAY further than just sitting around thinking about it. So start experimenting until you find what works!
